Damnoen Saduak

That’s “The floating market” to you and me
. This morning was spent at one of Thailand’s better-known attraction. However, many mistakenly believe it to be in Bangkok. It is not. Last night I took the bus to Damnoen Saduak – a couple of hours west of Bangkok – with Silje and Mari, some new-found friends from Wednesday’s festivities.

Acting in accordance with the guide book’s recommendations, we travelled out a day early and spent the night in Damnoen. As we were woken up by the gentlest of door-knocks, we were escorted to the nearest canal where a boat was waiting to take us around the market.

As so many other legendary attractions and sights, the floating market caters almost exclusively to tourists these days
. That would be us. Getting an early start, we did seem to beat the day-tripper crowds from Bangkok. They seemed to be arriving just as our tour finished. Haveing already spent a couple of hours sightseeing by 9 in themorning, the day seemed somehow out of sync.

After a quick coffee, we headed back to Bangkok, the girls to one more day and night at Khao San, whereas I went on my merry – and lonesome – way to Kanchanaburi. The sight of the famed bridge on the river Kwai, Kan’buri is probably my last stop before I go back to Bangkok to sort out all the last minute details and catch my flight home.
